Checking Your iPhone's Unlock & IMEI Status

Before you request an unlock, pay for a service, or buy a used iPhone, it takes two minutes to confirm exactly what you're dealing with — and to make sure it's actually a carrier lock you're facing, not Activation Lock or a blacklisted IMEI, since those require completely different fixes.

Find your IMEI

Open the Phone app and dial *#06# — your 15-digit IMEI appears instantly. You can also find it under Settings > General > About.

Check if the iPhone is already unlocked

  1. Go to Settings > General > About.
  2. Look for the line "No SIM restrictions." If it's there, the phone is unlocked.
  3. If you're unsure, insert a SIM card from a different carrier and restart the phone — if it connects and shows signal, it's unlocked.

Check the IMEI's blacklist and financing status

An IMEI can be blacklisted if it was reported lost, stolen, or still has an unpaid balance attached from a previous owner. Free and paid IMEI checker tools can show you the carrier of origin, blacklist status, and sometimes the financing status before you buy or unlock anything.

Rule out Activation Lock too

A carrier unlock and an Activation Lock removal are entirely different processes. Go to Settings > General > About and check whether Find My is still signed in, or use Apple's own Activation Lock status tool with the IMEI. If Activation Lock is on, no carrier, no third-party service, and no amount of waiting will remove it — only the original Apple ID owner can, by signing out of Find My remotely or in person.

Why this matters before you buy used

A phone that looks unlocked can still be blacklisted or Activation Locked, either of which can leave it useless even on a network that accepts unlocked phones. Always check status before handing over money — see our full guide on buying, selling, and traveling with an unlocked iPhone.

If your check shows the phone is locked to a carrier specifically, head to your carrier's specific process in our carrier unlock guides.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my iPhone's IMEI number?

Dial *#06# in the Phone app, or check Settings > General > About. Both show the same 15-digit number.

What does 'No SIM restrictions' mean?

It means the iPhone is not locked to any specific carrier and will accept a SIM card from any compatible network.

Can a phone be unlocked but still blacklisted?

Yes. Unlock status and blacklist status are separate. A blacklisted IMEI can be refused service by every carrier even if it isn't locked to any one of them, usually because of an unpaid balance or a lost/stolen report.

Do I need to pay to check my IMEI status?

No. Basic unlock status is free to check directly on the phone. Some third-party IMEI lookup tools charge for deeper reports like full blacklist and financing history.
