Unlock Troubleshooting & Common Problems

Approved doesn't always mean it worked. Here are the most common problems people hit right after a carrier confirms an unlock, how to actually fix them, and how to tell a real snag apart from a paid "unlock service" trying to take your money for nothing.

"SIM not supported" after inserting a new SIM

Restart the iPhone with the new SIM already inside. If that doesn't clear it, connect to Wi-Fi and leave it for 10–15 minutes — carriers sometimes need that window to sync the unlock with Apple's servers before the phone recognizes it.

Settings still doesn't show "No SIM restrictions"

This usually means the carrier's backend hasn't finished processing, even if you got an approval email. Give it 24–48 hours, then check again under Settings > General > About.

Unlock approved but no signal at all

Reset network settings under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. This clears out old carrier configuration data without touching your photos or apps.

Bought a used iPhone that still shows locked

Check the IMEI's history first using our status check guide — a phone bought used can be locked because a previous owner never finished paying it off, which isn't something you can fix from your end without them. It can also be Activation Locked rather than carrier locked, which no unlock request will ever resolve.

Carrier denied the unlock request

The most common reasons are a remaining installment balance, an account not in good standing, or the line not being active long enough yet. Check your specific carrier's requirements in our carrier unlock guides and resubmit once the issue is resolved.

Spotting an unlock scam

If a site guarantees an "instant" unlock for a carrier that normally takes days, asks you to install a configuration profile or app before paying, or wants payment for a carrier that unlocks for free, stop — you're looking at a scam, not a shortcut. A legitimate unlock only ever requires your IMEI and goes through the carrier's own system.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone still say 'SIM not supported' after the unlock was approved?

The unlock signal sometimes needs a few minutes to sync between the carrier and Apple's servers. Restart the phone with the new SIM inserted, or connect to Wi-Fi and wait 10-15 minutes before trying again.

Does resetting network settings delete my data?

No. It only clears saved Wi-Fi networks, cellular settings, and VPN configurations. Your photos, apps, and messages are untouched.

Why was my unlock request denied?

Almost always an unpaid device balance, an account that isn't in good standing, or a line that hasn't been active long enough. Carrier-specific eligibility rules are covered in each guide under our carrier unlock hub.

I bought a used iPhone and it won't unlock — what now?

Check the IMEI's status before contacting any carrier. If a previous owner still owes money on the device, no carrier can unlock it until that balance is cleared, regardless of who currently owns the phone.
